Fsae Undertray
My Senior Project was for an Aerodynamic undertray for our Formula SAE car. I was part of a team of 3, with my friends Oleg and Andrew. My responsibility was hardware design, and generally helping with filling in the gaps anywhere I can. Andrew did the design and manufacture, and Oleg did the documentation and reporting.
The Hardware
My responsibility was the hardware design for the undertray. It was required to handle the tension caused by the downforce generated, as well as be able to handle under a load that struck it, such as a cone.
The Aerodynamic Design
Andrew did the design in Fusion 360, along with CFD analysis in Siemens StarCCM. The undertray produced around 14lbs of downforce at 30mph.
The Carbon
Oleg did the calculations for stiffness of the undertray. The rules state it must not deflect more than 25mm. This required supports to be required on each corner.
The DAQ
Andrew’s CFD model was validated using data acquisition from pressure taps on the undertray. The car produced around 0.1-0.2 more g’s of lateral acceleration with the undertray on.
